10 Unique Exercises

Just in time for my next gym workout, I have decided to make a list of 10 unique exercises – which I personally tried and loved. These are great if you ever feel bored of your usual routine and seek for new ways to engage your muscles.

10. Lying Cable Curls

http://youtu.be/khyjpRPUEB0

Next time when you are planning on doing barbell curls, try these instead.Done properly, this is a killer for your biceps.

  1. Suspended Ab Reverse Crunch

http://youtu.be/hCt7npR4bDM

Just because crunches are boring, and suspension straps are awesome! Be careful not to fall though – won’t be a pretty picture.

  1. Spiderman Crawl

http://youtu.be/_K7rv_vFOWM

Great exercise to target your abs, but also requires you to use some of those shoulders an chest muscles. And the only drawback so far is… well, it does look kind of weird.

  1. Single Leg Hip Thrust

http://youtu.be/ZkH3JAxAgCs

Girls, this is our stuff. This exercise works those glutes out like crazy!

  1. 90 Degree Raise with Stability Ball

http://youtu.be/FplJx_cK_F0

Ever since I first tried doing some exercises with stability ball, I was hooked. It’s great for your stamina, improving flexibility and strengthening your core. You can do all kinds of stuff with it – planks, push-up, bridges, etc. My favorite though is – 90 degree raise (minute 53 in the video above). I know, maybe it is far from innovative, but just in case you forgot about it.

  1. Bosu Pushup

http://youtu.be/BZmNqSVo2gw

Are you a fan of pushups? No, me neither. But pushups on bosu are quite different; in a good way. Balancing on bosu is fun enough on its own; but once you are actually trying to do pushups – it becomes more challenging and more fun in fact. Be sure no one is watching when you are doing the exercise for the first time.

  1. Kettlebell Pistol Squat

http://youtu.be/Iy0J5Z4LWgE

When it comes to working out those quads, few things can beat well-performed squat. To alternate try doing pistol squats on your next leg day – or even better – make the exercise even more challenging by holding kettlebell.

  1. Tire Flip

http://youtu.be/nZb1PUm2_O4

This exercise is extremely popular among cross fitters – and for a good reason. Even though it targets quadriceps, it gets just to everything! Hams and calves, shoulders and traps, glutes and lower back – your whole body is involved in the movement. Be careful with your back though – and make sure you start extending through your hips.

  1. Floor Glute-Ham Raise

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dt0YcFf1E8E&feature=youtu.be

This has to be one of the best isolation movements to build massive hamstrings – it does hurt, but in a very good way.

1. 180 Jump Squats

http://youtu.be/e_b-j-0UleU

I love to throw in a few cardio boosters between sets when I am working on my legs. This awesome plyometric move is my all-time favorite, keeps your heart rate up and works on those glutes and hamstrings as well!

10 Avocado Recipes

If you have not known it already – but avocados are good for you. Rich in omega 3 acids – the good kind of fat – plus a bunch of essential vitamins and minerals, avocados lower blood cholesterol levels, and reduce the risk of heart disease. But the best thing about is still the taste! Smooth, flavorsome – there is nothing as delicious as avocado slices, with a dash of salt, black pepper and drizzle of lemon juice, on top of your morning toast! But there are so much more you can do with avocados – choose any from this list of 10 avocado recipes. Ditch out your old and boring guacamole, and experiment!

10. Avocado Chocolate Mousse

What is there anything better for dipping than hummus? Guacamole? Wrong! The best is hummus with guacamole’s essential ingredient – avocados!

  1. Pasta with Avocado Sauce

10 avocado recipes Pasta with Avocado Sauce

I am guessing you would not normally put avocados in your pasta – Italians don’t do it after all. But as much as I love Italian cuisine, they don’t have a vote in this one – mashed avocado, lusciously creamy and flavorsome makes the perfect accompaniment of your spaghetti!

  1. Avocado with Gorgonzola

10 avocado recipes Avocado with Gorgonzola

Oh, and one more thing about Italian cuisine – have you ever tried Gorgonzola? Veined blue cheese, pungent, salty, and utterly delicious. Goes extremely well with delicate taste of avocados!

  1. Avocado Dressing

10 avocado recipes Avocado Dressing

Salads are easy, healthy and quick lunch options. There is just one drawback – essential part of every – any – salad is the dressing; and there is no better dressing to fit your chicken/ tuna/ salmon/ feta/ goat cheese/ etc. salad than mashed avocado, spiced up with jalapeno, garlic, lime and cumin (by the way, ever tried grinding some cumin seeds in your guacamole? Do that, like now!).

  1. Cucumber Avocado Soup

10 avocado recipes Chilled Avocado Cucumber Soup

I am a sucker for soup. Honestly. Chicken noodle soup might a bit too much in summer, but this chilled cucumber avocado soup, on the other hand, will be perfect. Pour into bottle, shake with some ice cubes, and drink on your way to the beach.

1. Avocado Smoothie

10 avocado recipes Avocado Smoothie

I don’t often drink smoothies, but when I do, I make sure, they’ve got avocados in them. Not only do they give a nice texture and amazing taste – you just look at that beautiful color!

10 Creative Ways to Spice Up Your Toast

Toast is an essential part of any well-balanced breakfast. Whether you’re eating scrambled eggs or a bowl of cereal, a side dish of toast (preferably whole wheat) is always recommended. However…butter on toast is so boring and old-fashioned. Here are 10 other things you can add to your toast.

cinnamon toast

1. Cinnamon

This is a nice first step. In order to make cinnamon toast, just sprinkle cinnamon and sugar atop freshly buttered toast. If you want to be really fancy, add some raisins with a small side of vanilla icing.

egg in toast

2. Egg in Toast

Fan of eggs with your toast? Consider frying a sunny side egg inside the toast. Just cut a hole in the center of your favorite slice of bread, place it on a skillet, and then wait a minute before cracking an egg in the hole. Easy, economical and fun. Here’s a more elaborate recipe you can try.

3. Pears

Using a nice, thick slice of artisan bread, top it with ricotta, thinly slice pears, and ground cinnamon. It’s a nice way of mixing salty with sweet.

tuna on toast

4. Tuna

Low on fat and filled with protein, tuna is an easy, inexpensive topper for any slice of toast. Consider preparing the tuna with lemon juice and zest, olive oil, chopped parsley, and salt. Add some sliced hard boiled eggs for a fuller tuna salad taste.

strawberries on toast

5. Strawberries

Goat cheese can be a nice, creamy substitute for butter. Add some balsamic, edamame, and salt, with strawberries laid atop, and you have a fancy breakfast made for a queen.

figs on toast

6. Figs

There are many many toast recipes that involve figs and fig jam. However, the easiest might be sliced figs, drizzled with honey and topped with salt. Yum!

avocado toast

7. Avocados

Fan of avocados? Sprinkle flaky salt, olive oil, and another spice of your choice onto crushed avocado on toast…and you are in for a real treat! Full recipe here.

smoked salmon

8. Salmon

If you want your toast to graduate from side dish. consider topping it with smoked salmon and shaved asparagus. Held together with greek yogurt, this meal will definitely wake you up.

9. Mango

With toast, cheese and fruit is a winning combination. Consider lining some mangoes over some fresh mozzarella.Sprinkle with lime zest and sea salt and you are ready to eat!

bagna cauda

10. Bagna Cauda

If these choices seem a little too much for you, at least consider dipping your toast in bagna cauda. This italian dip is made of garlic, anchovies, olive oil, and butter. Delicious and fancy.

Obviously, we are dealing with bread here. Making toast is not an exact science. So feel free to experiment with different foods and combinations. Chances are, if it is something you’d eat, it will taste good on toast. Hopefully this article was a jumping off point.

10 Quick and Easy Meals

I am actually a people’s person. Well, kind of. I love having friends stay over. I love throwing out parties, preparing menus and mixing drinks. People laughing, people dancing; drinking and eating good, real stuff. No frozen pizzas, and no ready-to-go sandwiches. I do enjoy being a good hostess, and the quintessential part of it (in my mind) is never to be caught off guard. Fortunately or not so much, we all have a couple of friends, who apparently are not familiar with the existence of mobile phones, and show up at your door for no apparent reason at whatever time of the day they just feel like. If you are lucky, they’d go straight to your alcohol depot, drink and go. But what if they actually want to eat?  Now that, a good hostess like me would not let a guest, even an unexpected one, to leave on empty stomach! So, here you go the list of my top 10 quick and easy meals, which would leave your guests satisfied and your reputation as a great hostess would remain unspotted!

10.Mediterranean lentil salad

10 quick and easy meals Lentil salad

If you don’t have a can of lentils in your pantry already, then make sure it is on your next grocery list. Lentils are great; even the canned kind makes up for a great side dish or salad – plain with great dressing, some roasted vegetables or like in this version with crumbled goat cheese on top. You can make the salad even more filling by adding rashes of prosciutto, or any other cured ham; or even fried chorizo sausage – which goes surprisingly well with lentils!

  1. Chicken salad with beetroot and goat cheese

10 quick and easy meals Beetroot chicken salad

Who does not like roasted chicken – with crispy browned skin and succulent meat? But on the second day leftovers are nowhere as appetizing as the whole bird the day before. Solution? Salads! You can mix up your own, say, roasted peppers, prosciutto, arugula, and parmesan shavings. But I personally absolutely adore this one, featuring one of my favorite flavor combos – beetroot plus goat cheese. Good thing – if you have no baguette to dice for croutons, you can load all the ingredients into… pita! Not kidding; it is absolutely delicious!

  1. Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe

10 quick and easy meals Spaghetti Cacio e Pepe

Dense, salty, and pleasantly pungent Pecorino Romano is my dream cheese. Like, seriously. For a very brief period it was sold everywhere around, and I used it for everything: toasts in the morning, mixed with breadcrumbs to fry chicken, shaved on top of salads, with eggs and roasted vegetables. But the best you can – and you should – do is this amazing pasta. Sounds easy, does not it? Pecorino, parmesan, a tad of butter, and some freshly grind black pepper. And yet when the flavors blend in together, the result is just mind-blowing. Honestly, I never actually bothered grating parmesan and made the dish only with pecorino. But take in mind that it is rather piquant, and the flavor might be too overwhelming for someone who is not as big fan of this cheese as I am.

  1. Frittatas

10 quick and easy meals Zucchini&goat cheese frittata

I know, you’ve been told that a classic French omelet takes years to master, and that might have limited your egg repertoire to fried and scrambled. But Italian frittata is nothing like its French counterpart – it is easy, delicious and so versatile! Throw in tuna and green beans; spinach and feta; and my favorite kind – zucchini with goat cheese; there are infinite options out there, you just have to experiment. The best thing – double the eggs, take a larger pan – and you’ve got a great meal to feed the crowd!

  1. Everything with avocado

10 quick and easy meals Avocado baskets

There are very few foods which make me as excited as avocados. Why? Because honestly, what can you not do with them? Slice onto your plate as garnish, mash into paste to make a dip, squeeze between two slices of bread, pit and fill with your favorite salad. One of my recent discoveries – eggs baked in avocado halves! Crazily delicious and prepared in no time at all!

  1. Pasta salad

10 quick and easy meals Pasta salad

Who does not have a package of pasta in the pantry? I always do! When you are short on time, when unexpected guests are waiting at the table – pasta is one of those versatile foods, simple to prepare and pairs nicely with almost everything. If you love greek salad as much as I do, you’ d definitely enjoy this recipe.

  1. Cheese sandwich

10 quick and easy meals Cheese sandwich

Is there any food out there, which can make you feel as welcomed, as a warm, crusty sandwich with lots of delicious gooey cheese inside? I don’t think so! It can be as humble as that, but you can do even better by mixing in sliced tomatoes and pesto; artichoke hearts and roasted peppers; you can sub cheese you’d normally use for goat cheese or feta, and smear bread slices with olive tapenade, or even cranberry jam, if you have any leftover from the Christmas dinner. Check out the inspirational recipes over here.

  1. Tuna salad with white beans

10 quick and easy meals Tuna salad with white beans

Forget about your dull and boring typical tuna salad. This is the tuna salad of the century! Tiny cannellini beans, a spoonful of capers just to spice things up, sweet cherry tomatoes, and fragrant basil leaves – now, what can possibly be better! And even better news – high chances, you’ve got almost every ingredient stashed in your cupboard and fridge!

  1. Savory crepes

10 quick and easy meals Savory crepes

Ok, it might require some effort to make the batter – especially, if this is your first time. Otherwise, crepes are insanely easy to prepare. They admit all sorts of fillings and flavors, but the most traditional one – and arguably the most delicious – is a simple combo of ham and cheese (Gruyere is preferable, but any other kind which melts nicely is good enough).

  1. Hummus

10 quick and easy meals Hummus

I love sharing food. There is something peaceful about the act of sharing – something which literally warms both your tummy and your heart. Dips are made for sharing. Spoon it into a huge bowl, scatter crackers around, and invite your guests to join in. There are numerous recipes out there; but I prefer the simplest hummus. If you have all the ingredients on hand(canned chickpeas are absolutely fine), there is just no excuse not to make it. I also love to serve my dips with warmed pita bread – cut it into wedges, drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt and your favorite spice.

10 Caldecott Award Winning Books You Should Read (by Decade)

Last week, I listed 10 notable past Newbery Medalists and honor books. I realized that I should probably devote some time on Newbery’s younger cousin, the Caldecotts. While the Newbery Awards honor the best text in a children’s book (usually novels), the Caldecotts honor the best illustrations in a children’s book (usually picture books). The award was first given in 1938, and a medalist and at least one honor book has been recognized every year since then. In anticipation of the announcement for this year’s honorees in January of 2015, here are 10 classic Caldecott books you should check out!

mei li

1. Mei Li by Thomas Handforth (1939 Medal Winner)

Although somewhat old fashioned, Mei Li is still filled with beautiful illustrations and a relatively authentic portrayal of Chinese life (Handforth lived in China for a while). The story revolves around a young girl who, despite being prohibited by her family, leaves her house to experience New Year’s Eve outdoors in the carnival. In the end, she realizes that home is where she belongs. This is the second book to win the medal; and it is ten times better than the very first winner (Animals of the Bible).

2. Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey (1942 Medal Winner)

This cute story is about a family of ducks who cross the busy streets of Boston in order to find a home. As the official children’s book of Boston, Make Way for Ducklings is very much still in print and beloved, proving that young kids don’t need technicolor in order to enjoy good art.

lion william pene

3. Lion by William Pene du Bois (1957 Honor Book)

I adore this book! It takes place in the skies where angels are in charge of creating animals. One angel decides to create a lion. The book, for the most part, details the process. It’s a surprisingly funny book that kids could still enjoy in the 21st century.

4. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats (1963 Medal Winner)

Who can forget those papercut illustrations? Or that star-shaped snow suit? The Snowy Day is a simple “day in the life” story that celebrates childhood and multiculturalism. Ezra Jack Keats (who is actually white, not African American) wrote many sequels afterwards.

frog and toad are friends

5. Frog and Toad are Friends by Arnold Lobel (1971 Honor Book)

I remember finding these Frog and Toad stories so hilarious when I was seven and eight. It’s strange because I never thought the illustrations were particularly memorable, but I think the picture book as a whole (story, text, pictures, characters) is overall amazing. This is a short collection of short stories about a frog and a toad – and their trials and tribulations as best friends. Check out the musical adaptation!

6. King Bidgood’s in the Bathtub by Don Wood (1986 Honor Book)

This is one of the books where the text is minimal, but the pictures are extraordinary. The story revolves around a king who refuses to leave his bathtub, and conducts all his business in there. The pictures are quirky, yet delicately detailed. I could see myself flipping through this for hours as a kid.

7. Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann (1996 Medal Winner)

If I could make a list of my ten personal favorite picture books (a list that would include many books that were not recognized by the Caldecotts), Officer Buckle would definitely be up there. It’s a story about an officer who gives safety talks to elementary school students (anyone remember those?) It’s a fun story with accessible illustrations about friendship and compromise.

8. The Hello, Goodbye Window by Chris Raschka (2006 Medal Winner)

This is a fairly simple book about a young girl’s experience visiting her grandparents. As unique as the illustrations are, what I truly love about this book is the fact that the grandpa is white and the grandma is black. Interracial couples aren’t terrible common in children’s picture books. It’s nice to see a picture book that actually represents America.

9. A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Erin E. Stead (2011 Medal Winner)

There’s something so refreshingly retro about this book. It’s as if it were a “lost book” from the seventies. It only adds to the charm of the book. The story is about a man named Amos McGee who always visits the animals of the zoo. When he has to stay home because of a sickness, the animals visit him. It’s a sweet story about compassion.

10. Flora and the Flamingo by Molly Idle (2014 Honor Book)

During the 21st century, there has been a growing trend of wordless pictures. Flora the Flamingo represents the potential beauty anf simplicity of that genre. Molly continues the tradition with the recently released Flora and the Penguin.

10 Snubs and Surprises from this year's Golden Globe Nominations

This morning, the 2015 Golden Globe nominations were announced. Yes, the awards can be silly (does anyone still remember the The Tourist debacle from a few years ago?). And, apparently, only about ninety members of the Hollywood Foreign Press actually vote for these things. But the Golden Globes are still one of the oldest, most buzzed about industry awards, and an important precursor to the Oscars. Here are some of the biggest snubs and surprises from the nomination list.

quvenzhane wallis annie

1. Quvenzhane Wallis!

Although not many people were expecting Annie to be a major awards contender this year, the HFPA still found room for Quvenzhane Wallis for Best Leading Actress in a Comedy/Musical, and Sia for Best Song. For only starring in two films, Wallis has received more accolades than many actors four times her age. Go her!

unbroken oscar

2. Unbroken is Broken

Between mixed, unenthusiastic reviews, and a poor showing at both the SAGs and the Golden Globes (no nominations), the Angelina Jolie directed biopic is not off on the right foot. Unbroken may still receive a few Oscar nods, but Angelina Jolie can kiss her award chances goodbye. Again…she was nominated for The Tourist…The Tourist.

grand budapest hotel

3. The Grand Budapest Hotel is Still Open for Business

The spring released film may actually have a chance to do really well this Oscar season. Although a nomination for Best Musical Comedy and for Best Actor (Ralph Fiennes) were expected, the movie also received two surprising nods for its screenplay and direction. If the film can do as well at the Oscars it could prove that a film does not need a fall/winter release to play at the Oscars.

gone girl

4. Gone Girl is…Gone?

The film had an overall good morning. Nominations for its screenplay, writing, score, and lead actress (Rosamund Pike) is nothing to be embarrassed about. But the Best Drama snub is still suspicious.

jennifer aniston cake

5. Jennifer Aniston: Oscar Nominee?

The idea of Jennifer Aniston actually competing at the Oscars is becoming more and more of a reality. Between a Golden Globe nomination and a SAG nomination from a couple days earlier, Aniston is cementing herself as a contender. She is not a lock for an Oscar nod. She still has to compete against past Oscar favorites Amy Adams and Hilary Swank for that “5th slot.” But, man, she may be going through a career reinvention with Cake.

mad men

6. Mad Men Must be Mad

There was a time when Mad Men‘s name naturally appeared on every award list. But, now, things are starting to die down for the still critically acclaimed show. Mad Men was snubbed in all categories. I’m sure it will fare better for its last season, which will air sometime next year.

jane the virgin

7. Jane the Virgin is Golden

CW shows are usually left out of the big awards. However, Jane the Virgin proved that the CW was capable of creating quality award worthy shows. The comedy received a nomination for Best Comedy, while the show’s lead, Gina Rodriquez, received a Lead Actress nomination. The show became one of this year’s most critically acclaimed new shows. The nominations were definitely deserved.

veep season 3

8. Veep Snubbed

Ugh. This one hurts me personally. Although the show’s star Julia Louis-Dreyfus, received her usual nomination, the show itself was snubbed elsewhere. In fact, Veep has never been nominated in the Best Series category. What does the funniest comedy on television have to do to receive respect from this group? Keep in mind, it took a few years before the Golden Globes recognized Breaking Bad. For an award that prides itself on giving recognition to new shows and breakout actors, sometimes they can be cluelessly out of the loop.

interstellar

9. Other Movie Snubs

Interstellar (only one nomination for score), American Sniper, The Homesman, The Skeleton Twins, and The Fault in Our Stars

modern family

10. Other TV Snubs

Modern Family, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Masters of Sex, The Leftovers, Kingdom, Parks and Recreation, and The Big Bang Theory

Are there any other snubs and surprises I’m missing? Thanks for reading!
